Cindy Crawford On Ageism And The Realities Of Nude Modelling At 53

Iconic beauty Cindy Crawford is helping us look forward to our fifties – for her attitude to ageing as much as her appearance. 

Speaking at an event with WWD and Greg Renker, whom she built brand Meaningful Beauty with, Crawford discussed modelling in her fifties. 

She revealed why alongside her supermodel friend, Christy Turlington, she feels it’s important to still do photo shoots. ‘We want to show women who are 53, and I think Christy just turned 50, that there’s still beauty in that.’ And this includes ‘tasteful nudes’, of which Crawford recently did for famed photographer Russell James’ book.

‘I remember some snarky person on Instagram — there seem to be a lot of those — posted something like, “Ah, why are you still doing those at your age?” And I was like, is there an age where being nude isn’t beautiful? It’s just a different kind of beauty,’ Crawford said of the experience. According to WWD she noted the importance of women treating themselves as kindly as they would their friends. ‘That is part of the reason I still do shoots,’ she added.

The legendary model does admit that it’s now ‘a little harder,’ though. She joked: ‘I hope this is politically correct, but sometimes I say I need Viagra for shoots. It’s harder to get it up.’

Her skincare line, Meaningful Beauty (available in America), champions the beauty of confidence in its messaging. On her skincare secrets, she says: ‘Using it daily along with avoiding the sun, not smoking, drinking a lot of water, and getting enough sleep is key to looking and feeling good at any age.’ And, clearly, confidence – as much as genetics – goes a long way.
