Our whole lives, we’ve known about eye cream. We’re well versed in the best way to apply it (using your ring finger, ICYMI) and you’ll be hard pressed to find a prestige skincare brand that doesn’t herald the pretty little pots as an essential part of every 20-something’s daily skincare ritual. But, like a lot of things in the beauty vortex, we’ve come to ask, is this quick step really that important?
We got to thinking about it again after Australian beauty girl boss, Zoë Foster Blake, posted the below in response to a curious GoTo Skincare customer on Twitter yesterday.
Zoë’s definitely not the first of us avid skincare users to feel confused/underwhelmed by the sea of eye creams out there, so we asked two acclaimed skincare experts (both of whom we call regularly for advice) to give us their honest opinions on the topic.
Emma Hobson, Education Manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica maintains it’s hard to live without a good product for the eyes.
“They really can make a significant difference to the appearance,” says Hobson.
QUOTED “The eye area is more delicate as the skin there is the finest on the body. The eyes are generally more sensitive for the majority of people, and they are the first place to show the signs of ageing. Eye creams help to not only hydrate the skin and improve the skin texture, but very importantly protect the delicate eye tissue from premature ageing.”
“I’m on the fence as they are fab for tired eyes but not a must- have for everyone,” says Tuck.
“Eye creams tend to be lighter in weight and texture due to the skin around the eye area being finer and more delicate, and can contain wonderful ingredients to help reduce puffiness and dark circles,” she continues. However, there’s a ‘but’.
QUOTED “Providing you are eating a good diet rich in antioxidants, have no concerns with dark circles and puffiness and you are protecting the delicate eye area with UV protectant eye wear, then you can skip the eye cream.”
Our conclusion? The necessity of an eye cream is dependant on your skin type and lifestyle.
Just like not everyone needs to use a skin oil or blemish stick, not everyone experiences the dark circles or dry skin conditions that can benefit from a gentler-than-the-rest eye cream formula.
If these don’t sound like your skin woes, count yourself lucky and skip the extra step! Just never forget SPF protection — it is the most age-sensitive area of your complexion after all.
