Nineties kids will fondly remember huddling together, eyes glued to the screen and fingers frantically mashing against controls as Street Fighter occupied most of our childhood leisure time. Thirty-two years after Street Fighter’s introduction, fans can finally wear a part of the game in reality as they release their collaboration with Onitsuka Tiger.
The Mexico 66 SD was based on Onitsuka Tiger’s iconic Mexico 66 model. The sneaker comes in two designs and was inspired by Street Fighter Heroine Chun-Li. Both designs feature a graphic print of Chun-Li’s dragon belt, overlaid by blue and yellow stripes reminiscent of Chun-Li’s costume. Onitsuka Tiger and Street Fighter logos adorn the heel flaps.
Each pair of shoes come with a product code card that allows users to change Chun-Li’s costume in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition to original Onitsuka Tiger apparel, which was also conceived in collaboration with the game creators.
The Japanese influence is further established as renowned Japanese manga artist, Masakazu Katsura, designed a special Chun-Li visual. Katsura’s work has appeared previously in weekly Shonen Jump magazine issues.
Fans of the game will be able to take back this highly exclusive collaboration on Saturday, 27 July at Onitsuka Tiger Ngee Ann City and nearly all independent Onitsuka Tiger retail outlets. Only 120 pairs available in Singapore.
